Events cancelled as volcano disrupts flights for fifth day

SOURCE: C&IT MAGAZINE

Imagination and Adding Value are among the UK agencies forced to cancel or postpone planned client events as a result of the disruption to flights caused by the Iceland volcano.

Planes have been grounded in the UK for the fifth day running by air traffic control over the potential danger that the volcanic ash clouds pose to aircraft.

Imagination was expecting 1,000 European delegates to arrive between tomorrow and Friday for an event for a major automotive client, but has had to postpone the event.

“We were able to accommodate the British delegates as planned today, but we have had to cancel the rest of the event as there was no way of getting people here. We’re waiting to see when the volcano stops erupting to see if we can rearrange the event,” said Imagination group event director Guy Stevenson.

Adding Value has had two events affected. A three-day global financial regulation summit the agency was due to produce for 200 delegates today has been cancelled.

“We were meant to produce a conference in Amsterdam but, unfortunately, it was cancelled last night because delegates could not get there,” said Adding Value managing partner, Randle Stonier.

He added that an incentive trip set to take place in Istanbul later this week for an IT and communications client will be cancelled tonight.

Meanwhile, Ovation had to postpone a planned fam trip to Copenhagen, due to start yesterday, and the South African High Commission and the North West Province cancelled a planned press conference and cocktail event today as the Premier and delegation from the North West Province were unable to travel.

However, some corporate clients are pushing ahead with events despite the disruption. The Ultimate Event Company is organising a pan-European event for an IT client in Monte Carlo.

“The team and equipment are on-site and ready to go, with delegates arriving from the US and all over Europe today,” said The Ultimate Event Company managing director Sue Martineau. “We have not had many delegates cancelling and are expecting a good turn-out despite the disruption.”

Have any of your events been cancelled due to the volcano eruption? Tell us about your experiences.

BA (Hons) International Events Management

“The events industry is a dynamic, vibrant and flourishing sector in which to work and study with excellent and rewarding career opportunities both in the UK and overseas”

The events industry has grown significantly over the past decade and is as diverse as it is large; it draws on the skills and personalities of a wide range of people offering stimulating, varied and rewarding careers.

A recent report (produced by KMPG and the AEO) reveals that the Exhibition Industry alone contributes £9.3 Billion to the UK EconCatwalk Eventomy and supports some 137,000 jobs. Exhibitions are just a small part of the overall picture, as is the UK; events management on an international scale is seriously big business and covers most industry sectors.

Due to the growth of the sector, Events Management is becoming increasingly important as a specialist field of study. Events are diverse and can range from small bespoke private functions to large scale exhibitions, festivals, award ceremonies, sports tournaments, music concerts and world events such as the Olympic Games - as listed below.

Many of these larger events have a truly international dimension with international delegates, logistics, marketing and multiple locations.

What Roles Are There?

There are the event managers, who in effect are the project managers for a specific event and oversee the whole process to ensure the event meets the client’s brief and budget. There is a more creative element undertaken by the creative director or team to develop themes and specific ideas to brand the event and make it memorable. Production and technical staff that set up stages and arenas; health and safety and licensing specialists; marketing and PR officers; and a small army of front of house events staff and supervisors.

Whilst the degree is primarily focusing on the event manager role you may find that in later employment you undertake many of the roles mentioned above, particularly if you are employed by a smaller firm specialising in bespoke events. However in a large multi national organisation you are more likely to become a specialist in a particular area.

The degree offered by EBS is designed to ensure you have a choice as to the direction of your career and provides an insight into the overall dynamic of the sector.

Fitch Live is to cease operating in June.

Source: Event magazine

Fitch chief executive Lois Jacobs confirmed that Fitch Live, which is part of the Fitch network that has several offices across the world, will close this June.

“It employs a talented team but, unfortunately, the revenues have not been sufficient to support the entity for some years,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs clarified that it is not Fitch London that is closing but its sister operation Fitch Live.

“You should be clear, however, that Fitch Live is not Fitch London,” she said. “Fitch Live is a company within a much larger group that includes Fitch London and other offices in nine countries. As such, Fitch remains a vibrant and thriving global design network that continues to grow clients and win awards all over the world. We will continue to invest in this, our core business. Similarly, Fitch London remains very firmly open.”

Event industry to lobby Government at the House of Commons

Source: Event Magazine

The event industry is set to meet MPs at the house of Lord’s in an unprecedented lobbying campaign spearheaded by the Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP) and Confex.

MPs have already been approached by a lobbying group and sounded out by the BVEP. On 18 October, after the forthcoming general election has swept a host of new MPs into the houses of parliament, those with strong event ties in their constituency will be invited to the meeting.

Shadow tourism minister and Bournemouth East candidate Tobias Ellwood has already said that he would be interested in attending if, as is currently expected, he is elected and promoted to tourism minister.

“MPs understand Glastonbury… but they don’t necessarily get large scale meetings or trade exhibitions,” said Visit Britain head of business visits and event Simon Mills. “We are in the planning process for the lobbying campaign which will raise the awareness of the industry among MPs.”

The BVEP and Confex claim to have the support of “practically all” industry associations in the venture, and said that MPs in locations such as Harrogate and Liverpool, with a large event business, would be targeted.

“The event industry is still relatively young, maybe 25 years, but growing fast,” said UBM portfolio director and Confex chief Duncan Reid. “Look at Liverpool as an example. It had no ties a few years ago but now there is a convention centre and hundreds of meeting spaces that have brought money into the local economy.”

Separately Reid said that Confex had experienced flat attendance on last year, but was pleased with the quality of attendees. The experiment in opening the venue late, until 7pm, to allow after work business did not necessarily bring in extra visitors, he said, but did allow visitors already here to congregate late in the day. On the opening day (Tuesday, 23 February) around 700 guests and exhibitors stayed late and congregated in the central hall area of the Earls Court space. Reid said the experiment could be repeated at Event UK in the autumn.

Next year’s Confex will be moved to the later dates of 1-3 March to avoid clashing with half term.
